Alone Among Many

Today was interesting. I had plans to do some nature photography but a tire that was insanely unsafe to drive on changed my plans. After a trip to the tire store, I decided to head downtown to see what I could capture from a street photography perspective.

The Southbank

I decided to start my day on Jacksonville’s Southbank. If you’re not familiar with the city, the St. Johns River splits it in two. The sides are logically known as the Northbank and Southbank. Despite many visits to the Southbank, it’s been years since I walked the eastern side.

Downtown Jacksonville

After exploring the Southbank, I crossed the river and headed into the heart of downtown. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of life downtown on the weekend. With just a few exceptions, our homeless population comprises the bulk of those you’ll encounter.

As I walked the streets with my expensive camera, my nice clothes, watch, cell phone, etc. and noticed the many people around me in a very different state, it made me realize how blessed I am. Despite the many challenges I face during the week, I still have a roof over my head and food on the table. Sometimes we just need a little perspective.

There are two images I captured today that I felt worthy of sharing on their own. This first scene really stopped me in my tracks. The juxtaposition of the homeless man uncomfortably sleeping on a planter, using the bag which likely contains all of his possessions as a pillow, and the bright, shiny Hummer just feet away gives one pause.

The final image just hit me differently than the rest. Something you may notice is that it’s the only image in color. It was an accident. I changed the setting without realizing it. It was also a very spontaneous shot. Unfortunately, it’s difficult (if not impossible) to tell that the man walking towards me has a black cat riding on his shoulder. The leash can be seen across his chest. It’s so common to see the homeless in the company of dogs, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen a cat. I wish that I’d waited just a moment longer to hit the shutter but that’s how it goes sometimes. I think the framing worked out beautifully and the color actually works out. The darkened edges sort of frame it in a black and white-esque look.
