I was scrolling through Facebook last night when an ad popped up for the 8th Annual Hastings Blvd Car Show and I felt like it’d be a cool thing to check out. I’m always looking for something to do on the weekend that allows me to take some nice pictures.
So what the heck is a Hastings? Hastings is a small town in North Florida. It’s got a population of less than a thousand and it’s another one of those towns I’ve driven through countless times but never took the time to stop.
The day started off pretty bad. I had this great vision to capture a nice timelapse with my GoPro only to realize that I’d forgotten the screw to secure it to the mount. I managed to find a hollow wall anchor in the car that actually held it in place, though. Win! Well, not for long. I was using the media mount and there seems to be some sort of issue with it. Every time I’d turn it on, it would just keep cutting and powering back on. As soon as I took it out of the media mount, it’d work great. Ok, no problem. Ditch the mount. I only need the timelapse, no video/audio. Well, then I couldn’t get it into timelapse mode for some reason. I finally threw in the towel and threw the GoPro into the console, ditching my wonderful plans.
It’s about an hour-long drive to reach Main Street and the trip was smooth. I pulled into a business parking lot and handed my $5 to the Girl Scout manning the booth. That’s when I realized that I hadn’t charged my Osmo Pocket 3 after my last outing and had wasted the trip when I could’ve been charging it. I was at 21%. Fortunately, I’d grabbed the battery handle and it was able to get me through the day.
There were definitely some cool cars. The event was sold out and I believe they had 75 vehicles. There was a good mix of vintage, mid-vintage, and modern cars. Also known as really old, sorta old, and not so old. I knew I was in for a good time when I saw how the road was blocked.
There were some pretty nice hot rods and older pickups. There were a handful of food vendors but not a lot of non-car activity going on. The crowd was pretty good and it seemed like a typical small town where everybody knew everybody.

Of course, there were other photo opportunities as well. Rundown buildings or just the remains. Graffiti. Prized possessions cast aside. Considering it was literally a single street spanning just a couple hundred yards, I was surprised at the number of photo ops.

There was actually an interesting twist to the trip. Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday. Hastings, along with its neighboring communities, is considered the potato capital of Florida. Something else that popped up in my feed was a story about a local family featured in a Lays commercial during the third quarter. It’s kind of cool to think of someone from such a small town being part of something the scale of the Super Bowl.
On the way back to the interstate, I found a farm with about twenty or so cattle. While they might be confused for the Texas Longhorn, they were Ankole cattle from Africa. Their horns grow up to eight feet wide! They weren’t bothered at all by my presence and seemed more curious than anything as they grazed.
I’m going to work a little out of order here because I wanted to leave you with my favorite shot of the show. I stuck around until the very end and got to enjoy Main Street without the crowd and distractions. I just really loved how this came out.
I also recorded a video that you might find interesting. It’s got more cars and trucks than I’ve shared here. If you check it out, I hope you like, subscribe, and ring the bell. 😉
